Forests are called "carbon sinks", since CO2 is removed from the atmosphere in order to increase the "green stock" through the growth of trees and plants.
Deforestation perturbs the carbon cycle (see also "Climate policy") in the way that cut down trees are no more available to capture CO2 in the atmosphere.
